Herby

In early March 2020, a big, chunky five-year-old boy named Herby joined the FPAS family from Alabama. He had been abandoned when his humans moved away, leaving him behind. For a month, compassionate neighbors cared for him, but the house was in foreclosure, and he was at risk of being removed from the property at any moment. The local humane society couldn’t take him, and it was well-known that if animal control got involved, his future would be grim. So, these amazing people who had been feeding him offered to drive Herby to us, ensuring his safety and a new beginning.

Herby is one of the sanctuary’s special needs pigs. When he first arrived, he was morbidly obese, to the point of being fat blind, a condition where excess weight affects a pig’s vision. Though he has since lost a significant amount of weight, it’s common for pigs not to lose the fat pad over their eyes, which still affects his sight. In addition, Herby has some hearing impairment, and the combination along with living alone his first five years make him a little jumpy around other pigs still. Despite these challenges, he is incredibly sweet and gentle, with a deep love for humans and snacks.

Herby’s story is a testament to the power of kindness and second chances. He may have some special needs, but he is still living the life he deserves where he is loved and respected.
