The Mama Pig

Penelope, the proud matriarch of the FPAS pig herd, was rescued in 2014 through a local humane society after being found as a stray. She became the sanctuary's second pig after Ollie, as they had been on the lookout for a piggy companion for him. Little did anyone know that December would bring a surprise like no other.

As time passed, Penelope grew larger and began nesting on the back porch, signaling that something special was on the way. Though it wasn’t obvious at first, it became clear that Penelope was expecting piglets just days before she gave birth. With Ollie being neutered, the exact timing was a mystery, but on a warm Christmas Eve, something magical happened—Penelope gave birth to six healthy piglets right on the porch that were named for Santa's reindeer. She proved to be a wonderful mother, nurturing her little ones with care and devotion.

Among her piglets were two who would remain a part of the sanctuary family—Dasher the Flying Pig, FPAS’s namesake, and his sister Macaroni (originally Vixen). Today, Penelope lives with them in the main "OG" herd, now often referred to as "Gen Pop." While she may not be the top pig of the herd, she's still large and in charge as second in command, with a mix of sweetness and sass. She shares a close bond with her baby boy, Dasher, although, like him, she's a bit standoffish with unfamiliar humans, despite being socialized in her younger years.

At over 10 years old, Penelope is doing well—happy, healthy, and content. That’s all FPAS could ever wish for.
